IASTM Introductory Workshop at Leeds Beckett University

February 13th, the day the student became the teacher when our Clinical Applications Specialist and HawkGrips tutor, Dominic Smith, returned to Leeds Beckett University to deliver the HawkGrips workshop for the 3rd year students.

As part of Physiquipe Academy, we are collaborating with Universities to provide students with the opportunity to gain CPD hours on IASTM to improve their CV, but to also expose them to other treatment and rehabilitation modalities. The workshops at Leeds Beckett University being one of these events.

We worked with Ashley Jones, Senior Lecturer, and Helen Llewellyn, course leader of the Sports and Exercise Therapy Course to provide two, three hour workshops on IASTM for 3rd year students. On the workshops, we covered the background of IASTM and focused heavily on the practical applications.

As the students are very competent with hands on therapy, they took to the tools like ducks to water and really seemed to enjoy using them. It was also great to see the lecturers taking part too and exploring the tools. To be noted, the workshop is also for the staff!!

We explored the application of each HawkGrips tool, and practiced each technique across the quads, calves, hamstrings and back. We discussed when would be appropriate to use the tools in relation to the healing process and also how we can use the technique with our other treatment and management methods.

Overall, it was a really great day, running the workshops. We had a total of 32 students go through the programme so it is positive that the Physiquipe Academy is able to help upcoming therapists as well as experienced clinicians!

Student feedback...

"As a current Sport and Exercise Therapy student I’m aware that continuing my professional development with in the field of therapy is a requirement of the SST. Whilst at University I was fortunate enough to participate in an IASTM taster session held by Physiquipe.

The session covered the theoretical evidence justifying the use of the equipment within soft tissue management and gave a thorough and comprehensive practical session allowing to gain a hands on experience with the instruments.

This in-depth session allowed me to understand the evidenced based reasoning of the ‘Hawkgrips’ IASTM tools and showed me the multiple benefits the equipment can be used for such as reduction of contractures, myofascial pain and the breakdown of scar tissue. This great opportunity has allowed me to become more confident when dealing with patients and has allowed me to broaden my soft tissue and pain managment skills.

Overall, this session was of great purpose towards my development as a Sport Therapist and I fully recommend the courses to anybody wanting to enhance their skills with in soft tissue management".
